Summer Rain checked the gift box and ensured the table looked the way he wanted. Before he came home, he chose the handkerchief he thought Arthur would like and boxed the item. He liked his decision and hoped Arthur would appreciate it, too.

Tonight, he’d enact step two in his Arthur performance art project—adding color to Arthur’s structured and controlled life.

He paused when he spotted Arthur pulling into his driveway. His life seemed to even out when Arthur showed up. Arthur was the tonic he needed.

“Summer Rain?” Arthur stood on the porch. “I’d come in but the screen door is locked.”

He rushed through the house to the front. “Sorry.” He flicked the lock.

“Thanks.” Arthur stepped into the living room. The lines were more evident around his eyes, his tie was askew and he wasn’t wearing his jacket. He raked his fingers through his hair and shook his head.

“Are you going for the harried look?” Summer Rain waited for Arthur to remove his shoes. “You look stressed. Are you okay?”

Arthur sank onto the sofa and rested his elbows on his knees. “I’m not okay. I lost business this afternoon.”

Summer Rain sat across from him on the coffee table. “Because of me?” A sinking feeling settled in his stomach. “Arthur?”

“Sort of.”

“The bracelet?” He truly doubted so, but stranger things were possible.

“No.” Arthur offered a weak smile. “Everyone who has seen it loves it. You’ll probably get a slew of commissions. Kathy wants her own and said she’s made inquiries at Dress Me Up. She might have—I don’t know.”

“It’s one of a kind, but sure.” He massaged Arthur’s knee. “What happened?”

“Billy.” Arthur bowed his head. “The jackass came into the office while I was in a meeting with clients and shouted about how I’d been terse with him. The clients demanded to be transferred to another agent and left. It’s only three clients, but who knows how many others will go or if they even do.”

“What? That’s crazy.” How could someone be this rotten?

“He ranted about my being verbally abusive and throwing him out of the office,” Arthur said. “He said I don’t support family and I won’t help him—which I won’t—but they didn’t ask why. They just demanded change.”

“That’s their loss,” Summer Rain said. “If they didn’t bother to ask, then they were already looking for a reason to go. Honestly, Arthur. They should’ve asked what the deal was and why he’d do that.”

“Maybe, but I don’t know how bad this will get or if it will blow over, but it’s not good. I could lose everything.”

“Wait. You can’t be sure it’ll get that bad.” Summer Rain bridged the gap between them. He had to agree Billy’s rant wasn’t helping. He’d screwed a lot up for Arthur and Summer Rain, but they couldn’t let him have the upper hand. “Just a few people left. It happens. That doesn’t mean it’ll destroy everything. It means they left.”

“You might be right, but this sucks.”

“Yes, it does.” Summer Rain bumped knees with Arthur. “But you have to work with this.
